UK TOUR |
| |
Hey Lawrence, I got to see you guys at Cardiff supporting deep purple last night. I am so glad I went because both myself and my dad thought you were amazing. You inspired me to play the Keyboard. Just wondering if Styx are planning on doing a tour of the UK or Europe any time soon? I have to see you guys again! |

Met in 1987 |
| |
Hi, I met Gowan (or Larry) in August 1987. I won a radio contest... prize was a Tour Jacket (Great Dirty World), along with all his albums (3 at the time), 2 tickets to the show and a meet and greet with Gowan backstage before the show. He was spectacular in concert! So energetic!! Such a down to earth person... nicer than nice. I can't wait to see him in concert April 12th when Styx joins Def Leppard at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. Always enjoyed Larry's strong vocals/energy/charisma! Would be really cool to get another pic with him ... a then and now shot! I was a bit chubby back then (I was 23 and weighed 150lbs... carried it well though)... luckily I've improved with age and shed the extra weight. If ever anyone has the opportunity, do see Gowan and/or Styx... it is well worth the price of admission.
Love much

You rocked at Greensboro, NC last night! It was my first time seeing you although I've been a fan for years. I brought my son for his 13th birthday and he was blown away! We really had a blast. Our only regret was that we didn't get to meet you and get your autograph. We waited outside the fence by the buses but never seen ya'll come out. Have a great tour!

Hi Larry
I'm an usher at Copps, and I can't wait 'till you, DL and REO Speedwagon hit town next month! This will be the first concert I work without ear plugs 'cause I don't want to miss a thing. The only bummer is I can't wait backstage and get an autograph since they fire us for that. I guess I'll have to content myself with the Great Dirty World tour jean jacket you signed for me in the 80's.

Just Wondering How You Are |
| |
I was one of the lucky ones who saw you at Healeys years ago during a Healeys' Christmas with friends one December. I was there to see you and screaming very loudly at everything you sang that night. At the time, I did not really know too much about Jeff, but I believe it was when he had recently met the love of his life. Now looking back, I'm happy I got to hear his guitar gently weep and see the joy in his face at his new found love. At least we know he had found happiness.
You Mr. Gowan were one of his special friends. Great musicians getting together to jam. You had already joined Styx and some of those fans were there also. I've seen you perform several times since and am still amazed every time. You create magic by what you do. The song written for Diana (Princess of Wales) was so amazing and I'm hoping that you will once again feel inspired to write something for Jeff. On a happier note Styx is coming to Copps' along with REO and Def Leppard soon. I have not heard those two bands live so it should be a treat. Meanwhile, stay healthy and happy. Sincerely, Marianne p.s. Could you grow your hair long again possibly for those of us who like it long. |

Any Chance you could get to the East Coast for a show? More specifically Halifax.I'm a huge fan and i'm kinda reliving the 80's and 90's, you know, the good years of music.I saw Foreigner and Loverboy, and Honeymoon suite in the last year, but by far Gowan was my favorite during those decades. Please come to nova Scotia!!

Hi,
I had the pleasure to see you in concert a long time ago in Winterpeg, and we were so taken by your performance that you made a video there...I believe it was Awake The Giant!
I'll never forget it, and you climbed up onto the speakers, which was very dangerous, and you climbed using this chain metal ladder...very dangerous to say the very least, but when you got up there you just rocked the house! I don't know the song, and I've always wondered to this day what it was.
Anyway, thanks (belated;-)for the great performance, and also the video, and seeing it filmed, and what you go through for it!
Robert

Alberta shows |
| |
"March 20, 2008
It's good to be Alberta bound. Gordon Lightfoot sure got that right as the last three nights will attest. Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary all made me feel that great sensation that only comes from rocking it down Alberta -style. Thank you all for giving me that and
may the experience be repeated sometime up the road. I raise a toast to you all. Gowan"
And to you and the rest of the band, Lawrence! My husband and I enjoyed the great show in Edmonton, and I was fortunate enought to also see you in Red Deer along with my friend. Three shows in 5 months--never expected to see that. Glad to know that you enjoyed yourself, too. We've missed you 'round here!

Mr. Gowan~ Jan 26, 2008 will forever be my most memorable STYX concert. It was Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY and I finally got one of those coveted polaroid photos. I will cherish it eternally. I have admired your stage presence with STYX for many years now. A few years ago in Verona you sang part of "Lady" to me and I could have fainted. Now you have honored me with a photo and I haven't come down from cloud 9 since. I just wanted to thank you and let you know that I will always be a fan of STYX and of you. Keep on rockin'~ Miss Paula in Syracuse, NY |

A Criminal Mind |
| |
Hello! Mr. Gowan i'd like to congratulate you for the best classic song ever A criminal mind i was 18 years old in 1985 when you sing this song and i try to buy one of your last cd with song on it but it appears that in the province of Québec all of yours cd in the name of Lawrence Gowan are discontinued. I am sad to know that there is no way to be able to buy the cd best of Gowan i think if it is possible you should let this cd goes for sale again i think there is still a really good market for it for the young and for the not to young like me but want to go back in times and remember the good time i had at that time thanks again for the good song you wrote and sing Claude |

I came to see you perform in Calaway Park, Calgary in the early 80's. I just wanted to say that I am still a fan and I still listen to your music. I live in the Uk now (moved here 85) so unfortunatley I haven't seen you live since. Glad that you are still performing great music and maybe I will get the chance to see you perform live again. |

First time I met you. |
| |
Back in mid 1997 was the first time I met you. You played a show at the Imperial Theatre in Sarnia, Ontario. (a solo show). I was your house lighting technician for the day. You had "Amy Sky" as your opening act for the show. I still remember standing on a ladder focusing lights onstage while I watched you play your keyboard during soundcheck. I was totally amazed at your playing ability. I also remember the moment you walked into the backstage door and at first I didn't know it was you. I am standing at a table sorting through light gels and you walk in and say hello and you shook my hand. I told you that I was going to be your light tech for the day and you thanked me. Needless to say, I totally enjoyed working on that show and it was such a memorable day for me. |

Alberta Clipper %26 Lake Effect Snow |
| |
Hi Lawrence,
I see Styx has a few days off until the next gig on March 6th. If you are home, I bet you all are freezing ass cold up in Toronto!! BRRRRR...It was bitter here in Syracuse this morning. Can you put in a good word and send the "Alberta Clipper" back from which it came??? I guess this is the price we pay for living in this area of the world. I don't about you, but I'm sick of that "Lake Effect" snow as well. I have cabin fever. It's doing weird things to me...HELP!
Hope all is well with you. Take care and Rock on!
Your very devoted fan,
Becky |

Fond Memories, Indeed |

Like most, I got my start listening to you early. A friend of the family knew you in Rhinegold, and when your solo album came out, I was treated to it. Shame that it didn't go too well, but I maintain to this day that it was ahead of its time, and your longevity in this business proved me correct.
I saw you in Brantford for Strange Animal. I saw you at Hamilton Place for Great Dirty World (you cut your finger on a prism). I was in the first row with my best friend, and we so badly wanted to rush the stage. You noticed and waved us onward to be the first of a large crowd to shake your hand from the floor.
As someone who wore out five Strange Animal tapes, that meant something to me. Did you know that most of them had a sound glitch at the beginning of "Burning Torches of Hope" just prior to the vocals?
I saw you at Ontario Place for Lost Brotherhood. Against my family's wishes, I stayed in the back for what was my first meet and greet experience with you. I had a Gold "G" earring custom made, and you commented on it while you signed an autograph. I saw you again at Mohawk College for LB, when you did a cover of Jimi Hendrix whilst lighting your rotating gear on fire.
I saw you at Lulu's in Kitchener for But You Can Call Me Larry. I don't know how you could possibly remember me, but you commented on how nice it was to see me again (this, after three years since the Ontario Place incident).
I saw you at Pier 4 in Hamilton when you played an outdoor concert with Trooper. A friend of mine had you sign her... body.
With each appearance, I grew just a little bit closer to the man I idolized whilst playing "Victory" full blast on my stereo and watching the "Keep Up The Fight" video on my top-loader Betamax. A Criminal Mind remains to this day my favourite song of all time. Have you any idea how many tunes have passed through these ears in 23 years? To remain at the top of the list takes no small amount of talent and effort, and I applaud every professional you ever came in contact with for recognizing your talent and giving you the ability to take it out to the masses.
I will see you again in Hamilton this go around, at Copps. I know I will not have that same intimacy that I garnered every other time, and you're but a supporting cog in a bigger machine, but it will still mean so much to me. |

Tommy's induction into the Alabama Hall Of Fame |

Hi Lawrence,
I haven't written this year and I apologize. Hope your holidays were grand. Too much drama going on in my family so I'm off to relax this weekend in Montgomery, Alabama at Tommy's induction into their Hall of Fame. Wondering and hoping if you'll be there. Hope so. There are going to be around 50, yes I said fifty, listees (fans, die-hards--whatever you wish to call us) dressed in FORMALS for this fine occasion. It's a once in a lifetime chance to see us all NOT wearing Styx t-shirts. Hope Jason might be there to capture some of this. We're hoping to do a group picture either before or after the ceremony. We'll never see each other like this again probably. Don't know where our tables are from the honoree tables but we're at $1500 tables of 10. If you're not there I'll get a picture to you eventually I'm sure. My part of the world in KY is in an ice storm warning starting tomorrow morning as we plan to head out unfortunately. Please say a little prayer for us. Scares me.
Take care and sure hope you're planning to be there.
Kentucky hugs as always,

Ontario gigs |

hi from Peterborough.
sounds like you are having a blast with Styx. Last time we saw you (Market Hall in Peterborough? or was it Festival of Lights?), that gig was just about to start.
what would it take to play Peterborough? say at the Memorial Centre? the Pete's arena? I'm guessing Showplace and Market Hall would be a bit too small!! I could do some work at this end to help make it happen. The rock acts seem to get the biggest crowds at Festival of Lights, so it's likely that there'd be no problem with ticket sales.
Hi from Angie too.
all the best can you email me directly? feels weird to discuss this in a guest book. In fact if this can be forwarded to Lawrence instead of entered in the guest book I'd really appreciate it.
Mary

Hey LG!
Just wanted to drop you a note. I grew up listening to you since Strange Animal came out. I was 5years old! I knew the words to your songs then and can brake out into song right now if asked or not... ;)
A few years ago for x-mas a friend gave me your "Best of..." album and I fell in love with you all over again. I was 17 or so at the time and for a film class I did a music video to your verson of These Eyes. (thanks to you I aced it!)
What I loved about your liner notes what that you left a spot for us... your fans and that if we should ever meet you, you would sign it. We'll I heard you on the radio a year later. You were on 99.9 and you sang a few songs and told us that you would be at the waterfront playing a free concert. I dragged my brother down to Queen's Quay and got the best seat. When you came out I thought I was going to cry. You... were there, really there. Your entire concert was so amazing!
As you sang you kept smiling at me. I sang every song along with you. At one point I tried to give you a rose that I brought you. You tried to get me on stage but the security wouldn't allow it. All I could wonder is how even better that night might have been if I got to sing with you on stage!
But I still got to meet you afterwards. You were so sweet to stay behind after the show and sign everyone's items. So when I finally got up to you... you said that you were excited to meet me. That you were happy and yet surprised that I knew all your songs. That you disappointed that I couldn't join you on stage. You signed my cd. "Love that Criminal Mind." I was over the moon!
I then today... Criminal Mind came on the radio and I was instantly reminded of that moment in my life. Thank you for being you. Thank you for not forgetting your fans. You Rock!

Dear Larry,
Since the first time I saw you on stage around 1985, it was at Mistassini, Lac St Jean, qc.
Then, I've been there for a couple of times. A second shot in Mistassini, then a year later at Centre Georges Vezin in Chicoutimi.
Then, Le D'Auteuil in the Old Quebec.
Finally....Le Capitole, just acrossed the old quebec fortress.
Thanks for every fine memories that you ve given to me.
Hope to see you soon and finally have the chance to talk to you in person.
Because the nignt at le D Auteuil, in the old Quebec.
You were staying late after to sign up soe shirts and albums....But we had to leave.
I%3Cll never forget how you played %3C%3Crevolution%3E%3E from the Beatles.
Thanks again and feel free to write.
Kindest regards.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! |
| |
Hello Lawrence! Happy Valentine's Day to you and your wife!! I hope you are together today in California. Although, I am sure you must be busy getting ready for tonight's show. I am still super bummed out that I missed seeing you and the rest of the Styx boys last month at the Turning Stone in Verona, NY. I bet it was a kick ass show! I am scrounging around for your solo CDs. I still need to get the first one, Strange Animal, your Greatest Hits and the Homeland CD. I do have the DVD as well. I just received Au Quebec, you continue to amaze and delight me with your extraordinary talent! Shame on the U.S. for not taking notice of you sooner!! What I would LOVE to see from you, is an accupella live DVD. Also, don't you have a few videos from the past? You could do a DVD of those as well. I also wish Styx would do another studio CD. LONG OVER DUE! I really love Big Bang Theory and Cyclorama, but one or two new ones here and there...Not really satisfying us diehard fans! Boy, I am awful demanding, aren't I??? I just can not get enough of a good thing. Some people are addicted to smoking, drinking or even chocolate. I don't drink enough in one year to count one single one, I stay away from chocolate as much as possible and I stopped smoking over seven years ago. What I am trying to say is, you and Styx are my vice. I get such a wonderful natural high listening to and watching you guys perform, it makes me feel like a giddy teenager again.(and it's been a couple of decades since I actually was...)
Anyway, I have hogged up enough space again. I hope you consider some of my suggestions. Keep on rockin' hard, cures all that ails us, right?
Cheers,
Becky |

While sitting next to a LADY, MOONLIGHT DESIRES began to creep into my CRIMINAL MIND turning me into a STRANGE ANIMAL. I AM THE WALRUS and I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR I said to her, MISS AMERICA...nice to meet you, was her reply. COME SAIL AWAY with me to THE GRAND ILLUSION I asked. SHOW ME THE WAY as I have TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS. You're FOOLING YOURSELF if you think these are THE BEST OF TIMES I heard myself saying. We are standing at the EDGE OF THE CENTURY to a BRAVE NEW WORLD so YES I CAN she stated. You are quite the RENEGADE was all I could muster as an answer back to her. It was then that we climbed aboard the BOAT ON THE RIVER to become ONE WITH EVERYTHING. As we sailed away into the HEAVY WATER.....we heard chanting from the shoreline "KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE!" |

I finally got to see two of my all time favorites when Styx came to Kamloops in Sept/07. I took my 14 year old daughter (her 1st concert) as she is also a huge fan of both Styx and Gowan. Now they are coming closer to home for me (Prince George BC) and this time my son (nine years old) who also loves your music, gets to go. My wife and son along with my daughter and myself are all very excited to see you guys in March. It's funny, I have waited for 30 years to see you guys and now I get to see twice in less than 6 months. Would love to get an autograph if at all possible.
Cheers |

Story of thanks. |

Hi! My name is Lindsay and I am 19. I recently saw you perform at the saddledome on your tour with Def Leppard. It was the most amazing concert I have ever been to; you are such an incredible performer. What made it even more amazing, was that your concert was finally able to help my mom conquer her fear of flying to come out to Calgary and visit me from Ottawa (for her first time) so that we could go to the concert together. My mom introduced me to your music a few years ago and ever since then I have been so influenced by you as an artist. I first saw your moonlight desires music video on a tape that my mom recorded from much music while she was on maternity leave when she was pregnant with me in 1988. I'm so happy that she introduced me to you, and that in turn it was you who was able to bring her to me (I have lived on the other side of the country from her now for almost 2 years now while I go to university). So for that, I thank you so much, it meant the world to me that my mom (who also happens to be my best friend) and I could experience your concert together. I can't wait for you to return in March; I have already bought tickets for the show here in Calgary on March 19th. Since it is a smaller place with general admission, will you be doing any autograph sessions or anything? I really hope so; it would be so incredible to meet you, being the artist who has had the biggest influence on my life. Thanks again and I really hope I get to meet you sometime!

I saw the concert at Turning Stone Casino on Jan. 25, 2008
I was at Stage Table 10, directly in front of you. Just want to thank you for handing me your water bottle!!! I will keep it forever!!! I also got a pick from Tommy Shaw (and his water too), James Young and Ricky Phillips, and got to high-five all of you except the drummer. You are so totally awesome with the keyboards, and you yourself.....so handsome!!! I'm sure I will see you again!!! Sharon from Massena, NY (upstate Northern NY, along the Canadian border). |

Lucky for me I've found the gowangirl page on YouTube. If you or any others want to see how wonderful you and the boys are here's a link www.youtube.com/gowangirl

I was at the show in Peekskill, NY. Wednesday night. It was wonderful, as usual.
I have to smile now when I picture you showing my friend and I where we should stand near the stage. I really didn't feel comfortable blocking the folks in the front row knowing they paid $120 each for their seats. Don't know if you remember it, but it was sweet of you to point out a good spot to be our standing area.
I can't imagine life without Styx concerts God bless you guys!

Hello Mr Gowen
We have great seats to see STYX perform in Verona this Saturday. This will be #12 for me. Anyways one of my friends who will be joining us and has never seen Styx before and said he was on the Styx web site and told me that Styx will be performing without the lead singer. I set him straight and told him he was about 10 years off on that one. The current I would have to say Co-lead singer is just fine. Lookin forward to a fantastic rock show this Saturday.
Dana
PS: Is there a Summer Tour in line for STYX ?

Hello
I have met you long ago when you were in Cowansville Quebec. I will be going again to see you when you are in Quebec city with Styx, Reo Speedwagon and Def Leppard. YOU are the main reason why I am going to this show and I am asking you to please do, at least, one of the original GOWAN songs - like Criminal Mind, Moonlight Desires or anyone you like the most.
Thanks !

Happy New Year |

I just wanted to say "hello" and "Happy New Year!" It's been a long time since I've seen you and spoken to you. Nine years but who's counting LOL. Since you can't see my face I'll refresh your memory with a few events I met you at. The first time I met you, was when I did an intereview for the SAIT radio station in 1994 on the "...but you can call me Larry" tour. My friend Michelle came to the interview with me that day, and you dubbed us "The Michelle's". I've had the pleasure of visiting with you at various events over the years. Including when you had the lunch at Teatro to promote "The Good Catches Up". You always remembered me and I always had a nice chat with you. The last time I had the pleasure of talking to you, was at The Drink in 1999. It was just before you joined Styx. I was at your show in Calgary on Sept 30. But alas I was unable to go backstage to say "hello". It was great seeing you perform again, but I must admit it was a bit of a tease. After waiting so long to see you perform, a half an hour just didn't cut it. I really hope you do a "Strange Animal" reunion tour, I thought I read somewhere you're toying with the idea? Anyway I just wanted to say "hello" and I hope that I will have the pleasure of seeing you again some day soon. Take care. Michelle :)
Ps. Incase your wondering where I got my nickname on my email. I have a passion for old classic cars, and a dream to restore one someday and my friends came up with that nickname because of it. |

I don't know what to say, without coming off sounding typical or lame... Let's start with I saw the One with Everything show on my local PBS station, here in Syracuse, NY, the weekend before New Year's. I can not get you, Lawrence, and Styx out of my head!! I am 43 going on 44(January 20th) and I feel like you and the boys have awakened something in me. The poor girls I work with can't decide if I need locking up or if I am just being my normal wacky self times 100! If you come into my office, you find the radio tuned to the local Classic Rock station, with me bopping away in my office chair, content and happy. I'm on cloud nine. I can't sleep. I can't think. I'm sooo darned happy, I almost can't stand myself...LOL. I have this energy that won't stop. God, I love Rock and Roll!!!!! I had to purchase a copy of the DVD, I did. I had to purchase some Gowan CD's, I have. I had to get Big Bang Theory and Cyclorama, I did this as well. Now the ultimate would be is to see you all live in concert. They would have to peel me off the ceiling at work for a month after, so I could get something accomplished, if I saw Styx.
Yes, I have discovered Styx is coming to Verona, NY to play at the Turning Stone on 1/26, but alas, I am far too broke to go. SOOOO SAAAAAD!!! If I did go, I would love to meet you. But, not this time around, Mr. Gowan. I just hope and pray that you'll be back my way. If I get hungry enough for live Lawrence Gowan, I know I can make a short trip around Lake Ontario to see you, I'm sure. I haven't seen a concert in ten years. How lame am I? Hey now!! That was a rhetorical question!
ANYWAY---Where have you been all my Rock and Roll life, Lawrence??? I wished I had heard you many years ago, yet I can catch up though... I think you are Canada's little Scottish secret, and now that you are with Styx, this side of the border is finally getting to enjoy your remarkable talent, charisma, humor, good heart and ahhem... if I don't mind saying, sexy body! Thank you Canada for share him! I must mention, in my teen years, Styx was very high on my list of favorite and most played bands at my house. I have read you are a fan of Progressive Rock. OH, me too!! Progressive Rock really gets into my soul. Now you have as well.
I guess for your other fans, I have rambled on enough. I'm just happy to see the fire in Styx and I wish you guys would get to the studio for some new tunes. Take care while you are on the road. I hope you and your family have a very happy, healthy New Year! Rock the roof off of the Turning Stone for me! Maybe the gamblers on the slots will all get lucky down the hall, as you guys vibrate the coins from the machines!! HeHe... God Bless!
I'll be a fan forever,
Becky |

I just wanted to say that my boyfriend and I are big fans; we have even joke that we would love it if Gowan was our band for our wedding and sing "Moonlight Desires" for our first dance. We always remember hearing Gowan on the good ol' Degrassi High shows and usually end up getting out our old 80's music CD collections to listen to him. We believe that Gowan is one of the best musicians to come out of Canada and stay true to his heritage! You ROCK!!! |

Hi Larry,
Hope this finds its way to you. It's been a long time since Donut Hockey, but the sweater still fits. Any way at worst I'd like your opinion at best your help or encouragement. Around 4am Dec 9th some quarter century ago I found myself in between a song and piece of paper at the same time we were between a rock and cold place. It was my song for John Lennon.
THROUGH THE EYES OF A DOVE
I was the Walrus My best friend was Paul
Two 5 year old Beatles who knew and sung them all
We'd sing all those songs about peace and love
Looking out at our world through the eyes of a Dove
Crying to my old man, “Won't you take me to the show”
I cried even louder when he told me we were going to go
Singing’ out to the fans,
But I could feel you singing to me
When ever I close my eyes that's the memory I see
Go get your hair cut an' clean those records off the floor
Still 15 years later my mother screaming at us through closed doors
I say Ma c’mon we're singin' about peace and love
Looking out at our world through the eyes of a Dove
The games almost over,
here I’m lying in my bed
Cat's on my lap, Got some pillows behind my head
Then came the news flash,
Ah probably some planes crashed
But no, that's not what they said
Sorry man, but there's no way that you can “see”
It's not like in "63" with "Kennedy" no not today
Your' askin' me why I cried, well it feels like my closest friends just died
No, don't leave, please stay..aye
hay no no no no, na nanana...
You ask me if they'll come a time, when I'll grow tired of you
The dream isn't over,
No it's only just begun
If we can all sing together then the Universe is one\won
We'll sing all those songs about peace and love
Looking out at our world through the eyes of a Dove.
---
Yep, There's real music to it also!
Knowing that you are still as radical a neo Lennonist as I,
I'd like to send it to you.
Merry Krimble and a very New Year
David Finestone

It was a pleasure seeing you guys last night in Waukegan. A friend and I waited outside to see if you would come out; but we were told it would be a good while, it was freezing cold... and we had a frosty one waiting for us up the street. We weren't looking for autographs but just wanted to let you know that we appreciate you guys taking time out of your busy schedules to come visit us in Waukegan for the past couple of years around this time. It's a real treat for me to come home on leave and go see a fabulous show 5 minutes from where I grew up, in a theater that was very much dead for the majority of my life. Unfortunately next holiday season, I will more than likely be doing my duty in "the sandbox" (personally in hopes of bringing peace, not furthering war). But I just wanted to stop by and say thanks and I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season and have a hell of a good time in 2008. Keep that piano spinning, sir!
Cheers,
JD |

Merry Christmas And More |
| |
Dear Lawrence,
I just wanted to wish you the most joyous of Christmases!! You deserve all the very best..as you have given all of us our own oasis of joy!!
I heard you last night on CFRB online, by the way, and you referenced my favorite version (1951, with Alastair Sim as Scrooge) of my favorite Christmas movie! You were such a blast!!
I hope you enjoyed all your recent gigs at home..I was not able to make it up there for them this time, but some friends were there, so that was wonderful. If I had been able to, I would not have had to search your Google, 'cos I came through and was able to visit Toronto on the way up to Casino Rama in May. I absolutely love the great city of Toronto!! Have you ever gone to a place for the first time, and it just feels so right to be there...as if you are totally at home there? It was amazing!! I'll look forward to going back, hopefully in 2008. But, in the meantime, after the Holidays, we will continue our annual first STYX show of the New Year ritual, south of the border! See you then!!
With Love And Support, Peace, Hope, And Joy,
Janet

thought you all might want to read an article I just ran across about Lawrence. |
| |
"The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is probably the only awards event in the world that honours its recipients twice. Artists and industry types flocked to the Le Royal Meridien King Edward hotel in downtown Toronto Thursday morning for an action-packed press conference to announce inductees into the 2008 hall of fame for the first time. Unlike most other press conferences, which are typically staid, quiet affairs, this one featured four performances from up-and-coming Canadian singers, and Styx’s Lawrence Gowan as droll host. It was a show in itself.
This year’s inductees include Alex Kramer, Andre Lejeune, Claude Dubois, and Paul Anka, and 23 well-known songs, written between 1921 and 1982. Jazz great Oscar Peterson was also named winner of the Founders Award.
But Petersen and the rest of the inductees will have to wait several months before they’ll be able to hold the CSHF award, a golden statuette based on a sculpture by Ontario artist Elizabeth Wyn Wood, in their hands.
The 5th Annual Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala won’t be held until March 1 of next year. But it promises to be a good one – in past years, the event has featured performances from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Buble, and James Taylor. Parts of the party will be broadcast on CBC in a television special.
Not that press conference attendees got shafted. Four of the songs to be inducted into the hall of fame were given new life at the conference thanks to live performances from four young Canadian artists.
Rockstar: INXS winner Suzie McNeil opened the show with an energetic rendition of Les Emmerson’s Signs. Later, Quebecois singers Cindy Daniel and Dave Bourgeois hit the stage to perform Andre Lejeune’s Une Promesse, and Claude Dubois’s Le Labrador, respectively. Sugar Jones alumna Julie Crochetiere wrapped everything up with a beautiful solo performance of Paul Anka’s Put Your Head On My Shoulder that had guests chatting about her talent long after she left the stage.
The real star of the conference, though, was Gowan, whose valiant efforts to speak French were both amusing and commendable. “English is my second language,” he joked during introductions. As long as the gala in March includes Gowan, the CSHF should have no problem attracting listeners and viewers."

My fiancee went and bought the greatest hits cd. I found more songs I knew on it, but I would have to say my favorite song on the cd is Moonlight Desires. Thanks for making such good music! Lawrence,
I know we have told you how happy we are and how much fun we have had this past week, but I am compelled to tell you again what a wild ride it has been! Your performance at John McDermott's Christmas Show last night was nothing short of incredible, and you were so right about the weather being frightful! But I do think it would have taken much more than the storm to prevent us from being a part of such a wonderful show! You did such an awesome job on Run Run Rudolph, that gorgeous silver guitar and your playing were fabulous!
Joan and I are still on cloud 9 and refuse to come down - Thank you so much for these unforgettable memories.
Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas.. (again lol) and we hope that you recieved your cards okay.
All My Best To You,

Hello Larry,
Sorry I missed your latest 29th birthday; funny but I'm having one of those also this coming Wednesday : ) Hope you had a wonderful day and got everything you wanted. I wanted to wish you great shows tomorrow with the tall silver curled John and company in Toronto. How I wish I could be there. It's the best Christmas show around! Have fun and keep a watchful eye on any Junos you might have with you; the Boy Singer is still wanting one! : )
God bless and be careful traveling in the messy weather that is expected.

Well Mr G, you have outdone yourself yet again. Of all the times I have watched you perform Strange Animal (and you know that's a lot of times) I have never seen anything like what you, Terry and Peter pulled off last night. Not only was it great to see the 3 of you onstage together again, but Strange Animal performed with a Les Paul twist was a treat never to be forgotten. On a night of spectacular performances, you still stole the show, it was amazing!
Watching you realize you had an extra backup singer was pretty cool too, by the way. Thanks for another very special night, feeling quite spoiled seeing you 3 times in 2 weeks, so great to have you home. See you Sunday!

I listened to my favourite Cd of yours tonight, Solo Live: No Kilt Tonight, and I love the King Chanticleer Rag song that you play. I also love playing the piano and have tried to find the song EVERYWHERE but have yet to find it. Thanks so making such great music.

Lawrence,
I cannot begin to describe the magic that flooded Jeff Healeys last night. It was so beautiful to be a part of such a special evening of amazing talent, such as yourself. You were brilliant as always and it was so nice to see you here at home.
I know that somewhere out there, John is looking at you with ultimate pride. The whole night was just mind-blowing.
I talked to Greg G for awhile after I got home and he was very wound up and happy, and had some very nice things to say about you. He is so proud of you as well and said the show was, and I quote " Pretty Bloody Good!".
Thank you for spending some time with us, it's always a pleasure! We had such a great time!
Looking forward to seeing you Wednesday night for Andy Kim, that will be spectacular too!
Take good care, and thank you again.

It has been two years since we have had the pleasure of seeing you in person, and we are still stressing over the withdrawal of it (Please come see us in Winnipeg again!!). Belated happy birthday greetings et al |
| |
Hey Larry, it's Gerry here to wish you a belated Happy Birthday. Did you just turn 50, or am I descending into Alzheimer's land? Whatever the chronological date, you remain both ageless and timeless in my mind, old friend. I'm reminded of our first phone
communication, prior to my meeting with you and subsequently joining Rhinegold. I was standing in a phone booth on a cold night, and we made small talk, until you asked "Do you like Yes?" To which I replied "Of course. They're my favorite band". After
that, I really wanted to both meet and jam with you, Pat and Danny, which we did. The next year and a half was filled with great performances like the Moustache in Montreal; The Luna Pizza in Oromocto; Zapata's in Halifax and many more. More than any
particular gig, I remember our daily (9 AM, all you rockers??) rehearsals, during which we doggedly perfected our parts and band
arrangements, and talked about taking the world by storm - as soon as we could get a record deal!!! It's too bad your Gowan and Styx fans have never heard your early compositions like Madame Malabar, Trail of a Jade, The Undertaker's Funeral, Galaxy Dancer, Comic Strip Boogie etc. Your Rhinegold music was as brilliant as your subsequent solo work, in my opinion. You were just way too far ahead of your time, way back in 1978. And because of record company lack of interest, your fans have been deprived of a vast body of unreleased material, which I'm sure they'd eat up like dessert! Anyhow, happy 29th (officially), all the very best to Jan and the kids, and continued success with Styx. You DESERVE it! |

Birthday wishes and announcement |
| |
Hi ya Larry,
Jen here, your Gowanimal in Seattle who interviewed you for the Orange County Register in 2002. I'm home in Seattle now and still keeping tabs on your rocking. I'm glad you had a great birthday. We sang to you in the car on the way to dad's for Thanksgiving. Did you hear us? I about passed out when I heard you were touring with Def Leppard. Talk about flashback. I had to miss the show or I might have exploded from the excitement. Why explode, you ask your longest American fan? Well, let me explain. On Sept. 19, 2007, my husband and I welcomed a baby daughter into the world. I was aiming for Nov. 22, but that would have been an 11-month pregnancy, not to mention excruciatingly uncomfortable. I'll try better next time...
Love and other indoor sports soul brother,

Of all the pictures I've seen of Mr. Gowan, with often times lovely girls, I was thrilled to be dragged to the tv tonight to watch 'Cribs' at the prodding of my sixteen year old son, to see not only a beautiful home, but to see the best, most beautiful woman ever standing right there beside him. His wife, Jan.
Think of her often, especially during Octoberfest. It's just not the same without her.

Happy Birthday Larry,
Over the past 22 years, your music has been so important to me. I have had the pleasure to see you live 17 times and to have met you so often that I was starting to feel like a stalker. It was great going to the sound checks and hanging out back stage. The calls from BoB Roper and the invitations to special shows were great. My wife and I drove accross Ontario and Quebec to see a lot of shows. Still to this day I go back to those albums(can we still call them albums)and every song reminds me of a time in my life or a show that I went to. I can totaly understand those Elvis fans that are so stuck on his music for their whole lives. Don't get wrong my hair is not like it was in 1987 and don't wear my Strange Animal attire anymore(HA-HA)but the music still means so much to me. On your last solo tour you were playing many of the songs that were going to be on your next solo album but then you became a member of a little band called Styx. Many of those song were sung in my shower for months and eventually my aging memory let them slide away. Will those song ever resurface for the Gowan Army that still awaits for your next solo album. Thanks for the great music over years and I always look forward to some new stuff. Happy Birthday and ROCK ON!!!!!!!!! I know you are not ready to get that piano bar in B.C.

I know your birthday was yesterday. But you see, it'n not that I forgot about it. Never!!! I just thought that if I posted my message a day later, you would notice it more than if it was among the others. Clever girl, will you say? And you'll be right! Ah ah ah! So I wish you a happy birthday hangover! I'm still looking for my Gowan doll...where can it be...I had it last year...anyway, you'll get your whacks in spirit!

Your special day |
| |
Hi Lawrence,
"You say it's your birthday....da da da da da da da da....happy birthday to ya...." Oh, got musically distracted there by the fab four. I know you've already posted and are probably out celebrating with family and friends tonight. Meant to post earlier but had a house full of people for T'day. I hope you've relaxed today and are having fun tonight. I found my thoughts of you today connected to Thanksgiving because I am very grateful for your music and the person that you are. I can't say it any better than others who have written today about your kindness and generosity of time and spirit. We all appreciate you so much. My daughter Crystal and I enjoyed the show last month so much at the Wild Horse Salloon in Nashville. I was surprised at how Crystal spoke up to telling you all about the wreck she'd been in. You were very sweet to her and I thank you. I thought of 10 things I wished I'd said when you left. I hadn't had the chance to speak to you in almost 2 years and then I didn't use my chance. But then again here's a big thank you for reading your guest book. We feel a connection and I'm sure many artists wouldn't bother. Now you need to bring back the Q %26 A's!!
So have a great day and celebrate all weekend. If you happen to be at Tommy's induction ceremony in Montgomery, Alabama next February, I'll see you there. Take care my friend.
Birthday love and Kentucky hugs,
Pattie "Little Face" |

You are so special to so many, to those of us who have the pleasure of knowing you, and those who know you through the music. Hope your day brings you as much joy and happiness as you have brought to all of us.
Happy, Happy Birthday Larry.

With each passing year, your kindness, warmth and generosity, never cease to amaze me. You have touched the lives of so many!
So, Joan and Nancy and I are going out tonight to celebrate your special day, and it's because of you that I have these two very special friends in my life.

Hi, Larry!
Well, it looks like you have already read all of our warmest wishes to you on this special day, and I have read your silly little message to us. Lost my voice since last week, so I can't sing Happy B/Day loud enough for you to hear, so made a special request on our local radio station 107.5 Kool FM and asked them to play "All the lovers in the World" and to send you my warmest wishes over the air. Lori at the station just complied with my request and played this wonderful song of yours. They are located in the Kozlov Centre where I met you the very first time after an interview with Rock 95 on the first leg of your tour back in 1990. Miss not talking to you in person anymore....but I do hope you'll be back at Rama next year!
All the very best to you, and remember "If you live by the calendar, your days will be numbered...! Looks like you don't fall into that trap anyways.
Love
Blanca |

I thought I should add this note to the guest book in response to all your birthday wishes, quote:
"If anyone out there in the great dirty world is feeling inspired enough to sing a little song today, I've taken the liberty of supplying you all with a lyric sheet : Happy Birthday to you, You live in a zoo, You look like a monkey, And you smell like... Please stop this childishness right now and sing it properly... ( I'll wait. And please feel free to use " dear Gowan " in the last line.. ) Excellent. That was lovely. I can't believe you remembered... Now if you'd like to move on to the next traditional Rite of Passage ( the whacks, of course ) since we are conducting this ceremony via internet, you shall have to improvise. Please follow these instructions:
1. Take out your Gowan dolls ( not the one you stick the pins in, the one you blow-up... get serious )
2. Raise your right or left hand
3. Administer a good dose of butt-slapping
4. When your hand is entirely red and raw ( or just before you sense the rupturing of blood-vessels ) you will have reached the correct number of years required 5. I hope you're proud of yourself. ( at least I still have my dignity ).
The End... or is it ? Thank-you all for your birthday greetings and to those in the USA : Happy Thanksgiving ! I hope you enjoyed the party. Do come again. Lawrence Gowan" |

Dear Lawrence,
How are you? I hope you are enjoying your time off, and have gotten past your road withdrawals!
As I'm sure you know, your birthday falls on our Thanksgiving Day here in the USA. So, as I am about to cook that tofurky...I am thinking of you and your special day, and being thankful for so many blessings in my life, including you, your artistry, and your music. You have given so much of yourself, and you have truly connected, and affected me, and made such a positive and wonderful impact on my life. So, thank you once again for being such an inspiration to me in so many ways. I hope you have the most special and happiest of birthdays ever!!
On another note - since this year is the 20th anniversary of your "Great Dirty World" record, I was thinking also that this year is the 25th anniversary of your 1st LP - "GOWAN". This, of course, makes you eligible for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist!! If only I were on that committee, I would make every effort to see that you get in. No one deserves that kind of recognition more than you...you are the very best there is.
Have A Wonderful Birthday!!
With Love And Support Always,
Janet

Just one amongst so many that are wishing you once again the HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAY WISHES now and forever more. Hope you enjoyed the book and maybe looking forward to a new one at christmas time. It has been a wonderful ten years since STYX was so insightful on asking you to enjoy their musical ensemble and I am sure they are all, as we all are too, looking forward to many more years ahead in their musical family. So on that special date this week, don't party too hardy, remember the good time and special moments of the past-present- and the future yet to come, and get out there and give us some great musical moments! How about some new solo music? Take care and Best Wishes and See You Soon! Shirley |

Saw your note- how's the slave-hiring expedition coming? If work doesnt get any better I may send for an app! Took public transportation from Toronto's airport to Chinatown to Rama, and for several reasons it was the trip of a lifetime. [But I'm wondering- just what food is it that looked like eyeballs, purchased from large glass jars? ]Toronto seems like it would be a really neat place to live.
Wish I could have spent more than the 30 seconds allotted at the Nashville Meet and Greet. At least the venue sent me the right photos!Plus someone else's too. |

I just want to thank you again for Toledo, OH. Me and my little brother waited outside the venue after the show by the bus and waited for 2 and a half hours in the pouring Ohio rain for an autograph...or just a glimpse or a wave...but you kindly accepted to have your picture taken with us. It made my little brother, Tim's life. He told you that you were the reason he picked up piano...he hasn't stopped talking about that night since October 26.
Thanks for being the person you are...you truly are an inspiration and a hero.

Hey Larry,
Great interview last night! I wish that there would have been more time to hear you talk. Great joke about J.Y.'s colossal ego! I really think that if I would have seen that picture of you as Spider-man it would of been pretty Hi-LARRY-ous! Overall, any time there is a chance to hear you talk I will always take advantage of it.
Second, Happy Early Burf-Day! We will all give Thanks because you were born on that 22nd day of November, which is only two days after mine. Instead of cake you can have a Tofurkey!
Third, Did you ever recieve a letter from a fan when you guys played the gig in Grand Rapids? If so I was wondering if you ever got it because I never quite heard back from you. The manager of the venue said that she gave it to the STYX management so someone has it!
I hope to hear from you soon and maybe when the tour starts up again I will see you somewhere! If it's meant to happen it will happen!
Until Then, Much Love and Happiness,

I'm sure Halloween wasn't the only thing people would be thinking if they saw you wearing that sign around your neck. ;-)
Love the last note. Perhaps you'd have better luck finding slaves if you did an open casting call on Styxworld. Just a hunch.
Great show on October 21st in West Palm Beach, by the way. I yelled over to you backstage, but it seemed you were engrossed in conversation with a heavily tattooed and pierced woman, so I quickly shut the h*ll up. Still, it was lovely seeing and hearing you as always.
Hope your holidays are terrific, even if they are quieter than you're used to. If you get really bored, you can always crash the Shaw-Blades shows. I'm sure they won't mind.

Aug Show Va Beach Ampitheater |

Like the rest of the readings here within, I too so loved the show. It was a beautiful August evening here in Va Beach. I had exceptional close seating. I have to say I got a more than a few chills looking out over the hill behind me of the ampitheater with all the tiny flames as Come Sail Away started. My 13 yr old son was by my side, "hey mom look at all the lights, why are they doing that?" Well I lost it there with a teary kinda nostalgic melancholy came over me. Instead of hitting 50 this year, just for a moment it was like 1980 again.! no mortgage, divorces, kids, MS. Thank You. Deb |

Toledo, OH Show |
| |
Hey Lawrence,
Saw you in Toledo, OH Friday night (October 26th).
Wanted to extend a great big THANK YOU for making our evening GREAT!
Took my 11 year old daughter, Amber, to the show. We were in the first row, right in front of you. Amber had her blue camo STYX "GOT ROCKED" t-shirt on. This was Amber's 3rd time in 3 years seeing STYX, but this concert was the BEST!
Thanks for all your personal attention to Amber and to the fans at this small venue.
Amber LOVES her STYX beachball and your water bottle (you were too funny that night)! Thanks for giving these directly to Amber so she wouldn't get trampled. It was great that you guys would pay attention to the "littlest fan".
You and Ricky were so nice to Amber while you were on stage! Ricky gave his guitar pick directly to Amber. Even JY got into the fun by peeking at Amber under your keyboard. Hopefully this was a good experience for the older guys to realize that we're corrupting the next generation with STYX music, and Classic Rock in general!
Amber's favorite song is "Come Sail Away", so it made it that much more special that we were on your side of the stage and that YOU were singing it. AND, you sound SOOO much better than Dennis! Amber still likes JY's "Miss America" and she never realized how big that man really was until he stood hovering over her head!
Thanks again for all the fun, and we hope to see you again next year (hopefully in Michigan).
Although I'm a Tommy Shaw fan first, you and Ricky have converted me and Amber, so you are now on our Fav's list cause ya both ROCK!!!
Thanks again for your kindness,
Shelli %26 Amber |

Lawrence, it was a real thrill to meet you today at the Subway in Wisconsin Dells today (10/27/07). A long time fan of Styx, I'm glad to see you guys still out there making a difference. I mentioned I recognized you from the High-Def broadcast of the concert with the Cleveland Youth Symphany and Choir. I had seen Styx in it hey-day several times in Madison (WI). One particular concert I recall was a tour with Brownsville Station, it was great. As a 50 year old, I appreciate the your music still and wanted you to know that. One of my favorite albums of all time is Crystal Ball. Greetings to Tommy and James and the rest of the band. We couldn't make to the show tonight, but perhaps next time you're in the area....
Sincerely,

Hi Lawrence, thank you for being kind enough to sign the "Strange Animal" cd and take some pictures with my son and I. We drove from Indiana so we appreciate your kindness. As I told you, my friend and I will be seeing you at the Merrillville, IN show in December. We will be in the 3rd row on your side and I hope to speak to you again---we paid $200 each for our tickets, does this include backstage passes?? I'll settle for more pictures---LOL |

I have followed your career since day one and have been fortunate enough to see you three times in Vancouver - Expo 86, 86 Street Music Hall and at the Vancouver Cultural Centre - I was the crazy blond that ran to the stage at the end of show just so I could shake your hand, thank you for that privilege.
I was unable to see you in Vancouver this year with Styx as I was away at the time but heard nothing but fantastic reviews from a friend that was able to go. I'm very sorry that I missed that show and I'm still kicking myself in the butt for it.
I hope you do plan to come back to Vancouver some time in the future. You have always put on a great performance and your voice is incredible......plus you are still a hottie! ;) |

Dear Lawrence. I have followed your career since you started and still remember you being awarded the Juno awards those first years. I absolutely love your single "Criminal Minds". As a poet I have written so many poems listening to that song as many others you have written and sang. Once I found out you became part of the group Styx ( My all time favourite band" it just proved the point, things can only get better. The last time you toured with Styx at Casino Rama in Orillia I was fortunate enough to stay on the penthouse floor of that hotel also. I was fortunate enough to accidently meet you when I exited the elevator after the concert. As usual you were so nice. I want to thank you for all the wonders you have done for US your fans. God Bless you and thank you from all of Canada. Sincerely Yours, Joe Henn |

Nashville tomorrow |
| |
Hi Lawrence,
I don't know that you'll see this before tomorrow but I hope so. I have had it work out at the last minute to come to the show in Nashville Wed. and will be in a lounge seat closest to the stage but don't have any idea yet which side or where we'll be. We pick up tickets when we get there. This is going to be especially fun because I'll be there with my 25 year old daughter that we very nearly lost in a car wreck in July. So she and I are celebrating life--and she loves you too. Sure hope we're on your side. You sure can't say you've seen too much of me as this is just the 2nd time I've seen you in a year. Heck, I'm just hoping you remember me! haha
I know you have heard over the years many stories of the impact this song or that had on someone, or the importance of a song in someone's life. I referred above to the wreck my daughter had. Thsi was in July and on an evening we had 4 inches of rain very quickly. She was on her way home from work, lost control and hydroplaned. She ended up flipped over, hanging from her seat belt upside down with her head in water from the ditch she landed in. She got her seatbelt undone, crawled to the back and someone who saw it happen and stopped opened a door and pulled her out. No broken bones, just a sore shoulder. Miracle. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital that we could barely find a way to - so many flooded streets. When we got there she was tied to a back board with her head secured so she couldn't move 'til they checked her out. When I first saw her, my only baby, I didn't even want to blink. I just wanted to keep looking at that little face! Yes, you guessed it. My trademark song started playing in my head. I may even have hummed a verse as I held her hand.
Well just had to share. Hope to speak with you Wed. night. Take good care - DRIVE CAREFULLY! LOL
Kentucky hugs,
Pattie "Little Face" |

Hoping you will come to Niagara or Toronto area on solo tour |

I just wanted to let Gowan know he has some much adoring fans in the Niagara Region. In my opinion every solo album has gotten better and better. I'II Be There In a Minute is the sexiest song I have ever heard! I have never seen you live yet and would love the experience. I have been a big fan since the tender young age of 13 when strange animal came out. I was a friend of Kevin May your criminal in the Criminal Mind video. I almost got to see you with Styx at Art Park last year, but it didn't work out and I was sooo dissapointed. Good luck with your Styx tour, but I can't wait for more Gowan music. I also have a question about one of your songs. What were you thinking with the song Cyber Babes? I mean I know what you were thinking, but what were you thinking. It freaked me out a bit...just so you know. And one more question...do you have your Reboks on??? |

Okay, so the Def Leppard/Styx show on September 27th in Vancouver made my year brighter.
BRIIIIIIIIIIIILIANT. Especially when you guys started singing "the good old hockey game".
I don't want to get into it, becuase it would take the guestbook into next year.
I'm a huge fan of yours, just as 'Gowan' and in Styx.
Well, actually I got made fun of recently, I bought your 'Best of' album two nights ago.
Someone thought it would be funny to ask me why I like such a 'cheesy' canadian singer like yourself. I didn't really have an answer.
I actually wanted to smack him with the CD, but that might crack the case.
As for the show, I went for Def Leppard (they are my favourite band) but I honestly liked the Styx performance better, and I love your voice. It was my first concert. Well. Although for the parts where you were playing the keyboard, your backside was facing our general side of the venue. But we could still hear you.

Vancouver Show Sept. 27th |
| |
Hi Lawrence,
I just have to say, the last time I saw you in concert was nearly 20 yrs ago at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. This time it was a bigger venue, with Styx and i was blown away by your energy on stage, and the fact that your voice has simply gotten better over the years. I am not much of a Styx fan, but the show was phenominal - the energy you put into the performance definitely rubbed off on the others and you all had such a great rapport with the audience. It was a very enjoyable experience. I especially loved the hockey sticks, beach balls, tshirts and masses of guitar picks at the finale! Very cool. I"m sending the webmistress some photos i took that night. And I'd definitely see you guys in concert again now that I know how great you are.

I have been a styx fan since I was 14, and I yet to meet the band. LG, you are great. Maybe this time I'll meet you guys and get pics. One problem, House Of Blues won't let me bring in my camera, grrrr.
Maybe I can talk Julian D. into sneaking in my camera. Thirty years is a long time to wait to meet the great band that I love so much. LG, I love the way you take poloroid pics and hand them out, I almost got one, but some guy pushed me down and grabbed it. I guess he needed it more than I did. Remember, I'll be at HOB in Hollywood. |

All I can say is...HOW STUPID AM I REALLY? I've been listening to this man's music since I was like 10 years old but never saw him live until just recently. WOW!!! I was blown away, truly. I knew he was with Styx and looked forward to seeing him with them but was never a big Styx fan at all. So how stupid am I really because the whole package simply rocked! I've been a hardcore Leppard fan for years and years and have seen them many, many (too many) times. Thank you Lawrence for a gracious kick in the ass I've needed for a while now. I was at the Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver shows and night after night couldn't wait to feast my eyes on Lawrence er, Styx lol! In fact, I'm so blown away I made sure and picked up the CD catalog for both as well as DVD's...amazing!
I simply must see you again so I will be in L.A. in February at the House of Blues, hopefully we can chat...Marlene are you in? I live in Calgary too (big smiles!)

WOW!!! That's about all I can say. I haven't had so much fun at a concert since I saw LG play the Bessborough Gardens in the late 80's. I took my daughter for her 15th birthday and we both had the time of our lives!! Def Leppard was great but Styx was better and when they played 'A Criminal Mind' I thought I was gonna cry (I was so hoping they would play a Gowan song or two) And the energy from LG! My daughter was shocked that he never left the stage for their whole performance. What a show! What a fabulous stage presence! Once again, WOW!! |

I finally get a chance to put in a comment about a Styx show! My husband, two friends and myself were treated as special guests at the Calgary show and enjoyed every minute of visiting with Gowan (got a chance to chat with Tommy and JY as well). Gowan is such a gracious host. The show was fantastic.. but having to share the stage with Def Leppard, it was not long enough for my liking and I didn't get to hear a lot of my favourites but.... they did play A Criminal Mind, one of my all time Gowan favourites so that made up for missing some of the other tunes. I was also allowed (for a little while) to take photos so please go to http://www.gowan.org/gallery/calgary-07.htm to view them if you like.
Larry and the guys certainly have not lost their touch - a great bunch of guys and fantastic rockers as well!!!! Keep doing this as long as you are able.

Do I start with "I'm a big fan"? How cliche. But damn if I can think of any other way to start. The Gowan (Styx) version of Salty Dog is on my CD player in my car right now and is a great cover, one of the best from Big Bang. If I were still getting music on vinyl I bet I'd have worn the groove right out. I think I did that with the first couple of albums I got of his (still have them).
I remember sneaking into the Festival Square in Stratford, Ontario to listen to Rhinegold when they played at the Engine Shed (thanks Mr. Mahr R.I.P.). How Gowan, jumping around as he did, didn't render himself unconscious on the exposed pipes and low ceiling I will never understand. Then I saw him in Stratford again when he played my high school. WOW! A friend of mine (David Kalmusky- a professional musician now- got a chance to meet him and I hated him for it.... probably still do) I've yet to see Styx... damn.
I've never been one to write to or about celebrities (or talk about them even)so this is a real departure for me giving into the urge to touch the immortals. That said I don't know if he will even read this.
I was just playing some of LG's music today, as I do so very often and the song "Guerrilla Soldier" came on. I was struck by the appropriateness of the song to the conflicts currently (and for some time now) making headlines.
"Eighteen months in a foreign wasteland
Scenes of terror still fresh and ripe
Found a place to come face to face
Like the gutter-snipes
Whether you like it or not
There ain't no end in sight"
Our Canadian boys/girls in uniform in Afghanistan are trying to do a job in a short time that (while there were different motives) the Russians failed to do in a decade facing cultural and philosophical differences backed with road side bombs. The song seems prophetic n'est pas?
Ok compliments don and rambling over.
I've been looking all over for the video for "Dancing On My Own Ground". Anyone have any ideas where I can get a copy? I'm also looking for a guitar tab for the same (because I'm a hack player and can't figure out some of it loser that I am!)
If this does get to Mr. Gowan (I'd call you Larry but we just met) I hope that my ramblings adequately show my appreciation for a couple of decades of entertainment, joy and tears (when no one looking). Merci pour les mémoires! And.. while I love Styx (sing for the day is my favorite) I would still love to hear some new Gowan!

Her teacher loved it and so did her classmates. She had to analyze the song and tell what she specifically liked about it. She said she loved the texture of your voice and the keyboard. (This is the girl who has your picture on her nightstand!)
Unfortunately, she won't be at the Dells the 27th...and I've heard no END of grief about that!!
But her mom and dad will be there ready to ROCK!
Love ya LG...tell your Styx family we send them our best !

A Chance Meeting |
| |
I felt compelled to thank both you and Tommy Shaw for being such genuinely stand up and kind people. We happened to meet in line at the Denver Airport today and you were both open to my intrusion into your lives and very down to earth. You never know what kind of reaction you will get when you meet people of celebrity. The encounter can leave you feeling tarnished and take the enjoyment out of their work. You two were a class act and I will enjoy your music even more knowing that such great people are behind the experience. Thanks again and I wanted to make sure your other fans know you are the real deal.

I'm so glad you and the guys are having such a great time on tour! I saw y'all in Dallas on the first, and you were awesome! The only complaint (a minor one :)) is that there wasn't enough Styx. lol But I am eagerly awaiting your next show at Billy Bob's, and I know it'll be just as awesome!
Feel free to email me anytime. Or you can contact me at MySpace...
Love,

In Search of Canada and the Almighty Molson |

Just wanted to stop by and say you are the man! The show in Dallas last weekend was awesome! It was the first chance I've ever had to be a crazy dancin' fool in the 2nd row. I'm currently out in Spokane, WA at Air Force Survival School and happened to be watching your Muchmusic concert DVD during some down time the other day. There was a quote that you read in your interview segment (the one about perseverance) that I'm really feeling at the moment, so I'm taking it with when I go out into the field. They told us not to evade into Canada, but a bunch of us decided that we might try and make a break for it. :) In any case, if the Air Force lets me, I hope to see you guys back home in Waukegan, IL in December. I'm hoping to bring my mom to the show as a Christmas present. And I might try and sell my soul to the mayor, for a backstage pass. :)
Rock On,
JD |
